Hooking Fairy Tales

Extraordinary Rugs Inspired by the Golden Age of Illustration

Author: Robin Rennie

The era between the 1880s and the 1920s is known as the Golden Age of Illustration of children’s books—especially for fairy tales. It brought little-known illustrators such as Beatrix Potter, Gustave Dore, and W.W. Denslow into worldwide prominence. What began as simple woodcuts and line drawings evolved into amazing works of art, and simple books for children became hugely popular for adults.

Inspired by these amazing and fanciful illustrations, dozens of McGown Certified Teachers—among the most talented hooking artists in the county—accepted the challenge of creating hooked rugs using Golden Age drawings as their patterns. The result of their efforts is a stunning showcase of the art of rug hooking. Featuring 75 fantastical pieces, and including the fascinating stories behind the original creators and their creations, Hooking Fairy Tales is sure to be a treasured addition to any rug hooker’s library.

Robin Rennie learned to knit at her grandmother’s knee at the age of three and has loved fibers ever since. She has been a certified McGown rug hooking teacher since 2005 and serves as executive advisor on the board of directors for the McGown National Rug Hooking Guild. She is a member of the Southwestern Michigan Rug Hookcrafters, McGown Guild, Chapter 2; the Woolwrights Rug Hooking Guild; and the American Federation of Traditional Hooking Artists, Chapter 106.
