Volume XXXIV, Number 4
In 1993, Catlett’s series of block prints known as “I am the Black Woman” was published in the book Lift Every Voice and Sing, illustrating the words of that beloved anthem. In 2020, that book inspired a group of rug hookers across the U.S. and Canada to embark on an ambitious project to adapt Catlett’s prints for hooked rugs, bringing her work to the attention of the broader public in general, and the rug hooking community in particular. We are pleased to present a generous sample of those rugs in this issue, along with reproductions of the Catlett prints that inspired them.
